FRAGMENT OF A HEAD
2019Atlas Unlimited, a transnational collaborative led by visual artist Karthik Pandian and choreographer Andros Zins-Browne, asked me to collaborate on a work for their exhibition at 80WSE in New York. Their project, a combination of sculpture and storytelling with iterations in galleries around the world, explored tracing the flows of people, art, and artifacts across geographies and cultures in the past, present, and future.
The work I was asked to design and produce is a display case, which holds a fragment of a limestone sculpture by Zakaria Almoutlak, and is imagined as a contemporary interpretation of a traditional Turkish tea table. The inlaid wood and decorative details of the traditional tables are subtly referenced by laminated strips of white oak which are cut at an angle on the ends, creating the distinctive legs. The glass is held together with delicate 3D printed brass connectors which allow the panes to float.
